The Caravan

A short story

The sands whipped around us, grains pelted my face like bullets. The desert heat added to the overall struggle and caused everyone to slow down. The camels and heavy loads were no help either. Yet the struggle faced day by day was well worth the profit.

We were heading to Silk City, hoping to trade some silver and furs for Silk. Silk is well valued in the east, and if we brought some back we would get a good amount of profit. The trek meant leaving behind our families in search of a better life for them.

The journey would take over 7 months, round trip.

A few other friends as well as myself, had decided to join in on the silk craze. We bought supplies and prepared for the journey ahead. All of us left in early summer, hoping to

return by early spring or earlier. Trekking through the lands, we hadn't met a sand storm till now. The vast dunes of the desert were forgiving to us. The sands didn't cover the trails and roads, and nor did anyone get over dehydrated. Today, nature had

not been kind with us. We slowly progressed to the next town, through heat and sand. By the time we arrived, everyone was famished. We headed for the inn and bought some hot meals. We also bought some more resilient equipment. The moon eventually rose

over head. We returned to the in and went in for a rest.

We'd stop by a few of these towns on our trip to the Silk City, but soon we had to cross the Folk Sea. At the port, we would stock up on food for 5 days of travel. We then rented a ship, one

that could suit all of our needs. At night, we set sail seeing how that was when the winds and heat would be at a low. The trip drew on for 4 days, heat and sandstorms were an after thought. The Silk City emerged in the distance, we eagerly headed in for

the last days till we arrived. The gates were broad and tall. We called up for the gate to be opened, and soon our calls were answered. Slowly, the doors opened and we began to look where to begin, our reaping of rewards.
